"Clearly he has hundreds of years of experience."
The New G.I. Bill proposed by Jim Webb.
One would think John McCain who served in Vietnam, the Spanish-American War and the Pelopponesian War (Ha! Get it? He's old.) would support this...but he doesn't.

Terrible news via Cambridge
Not only is Harvard Book Store getting sold (nooooooooooo!); but Magnolia's is closing (nooooooooo!).

For the lit junkies
Four Stories is a literary series that brings four authors of varying backgrounds together for themed discussions (" The Bitter End: Stories of loss, endings, and final acts", " Emails from the Edge: 21st Century Tales of Far-Away Places") each month at a local Boston bar/club . I'm beside myself with disappointment that I just managed to miss the May event and the June one will be held in Japan. PS, looking back, the Emerson community seems to have a great presence here.

Wicked.
Say it! Say it! What is that thing over there where you get water?
It's a bubblah.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Come, be elitist with me
My private liberal arts education and I present:
NPR's summer reading list (many of these will find their way onto my library reserve list)
The question of elitism in the 08 Campaign
Self-indulgent melodrama!
My new faaaaaavorite term, coming soon to the next conversation with me, near you.

Boston Pops Edgefest
I'm going to see Natalie Merchant perform at Edgefest with the Boston Pops this coming Wednesday (for the interested, The Dresden Dolls' Amanda Palmer is also performing in the series). The Everyday Visuals, a local Boston band, will also perform a set.
And to top it off, I scored front row, balcony seats so my short self won't have to deal with all you normal height+ people. COULD I BE MORE EXCITED? I DON'T THINK SO!

Playing catch-up
Emily Gould's article in this Sunday's Times Magazine - source of waaaaaay too much controversy. Everyone get over themselves.
Grumble, grumble, bicyclists getting their way.
The Yankees don't win a World Series for a few years and it's all complain, complain, complain.
Another one of those "all the books you should ever read" things.
Speaking of which, damn you Francine Pascal.

I'm temporarily blinded for this entry.
Yah, I just bought the MALM dresser, used, for a sweet deal! Anyway, on to more important things...
For the linguists - Word Time on Flickr is a group dedicated to having people record themselves reading a list of words that carry the potential of having different pronunciations. It's CHOW-DAH, say it right!
Looks like I wasn't the only one who thought Madonna's 4 Minutes video was hella creepy.
Yet ANOTHER reason to hate cyclists - you guys need to have a meeting and decide whether you're going to be self-righteous pricks or misanthropic environmentalists, you can't be both.

Another in a long series of city-centric posts
First, a little love for NYC - this guy is trying to draw every person in New York.
Bostonist feels my pain! Bicyclists: are you aware that if you hit a person it's probably going to hurt you, too? Get some fucking brakes.
And the Globe's 25 things to do under $25, right on time for all this nice spring weather.

Going off my last post...
This is from Green Guardian, a site for residents from the Twin Cities - a guide to common household items that can/cannot be recycled(PDF) (again on the plastics, pretty much #1s and 2s only).
And is anyone else creeped out by the idea that we haven't figured out a way to reuse the other numbered plastics in any useful way so they just get landfilled or incinerated? Spectacular. More talk about reducing use (or at least, single-uses) of plastics.

Pedestrians, unite?
"At times I have to acknowledge that my dislike of them is visceral and perhaps irrational. But it is no less real for that. I'm talking, of course, about bicyclists."
Really interesting piece from NPR about the two primary ways of dealing with children's gender disorders.
Apparently all the hoarding of plastics is doing no good - #1s and 2s are probably the only things you should be tossing into your recycle bins.

The mercury just hit 60 here
With gas prices going up, you can expect - oh, wait for it! - the T to be even more crowded! Yaaaaaaay! (Green Line Extension, yes?)
I thought there was only one situation where it was typical to see someone drive through a crowd drunk: when the Northeastern students run into the streets after a Patriots game. Guess I was wrong.
From NYTimes: Can you become a creature of new habits? I'm going to consciously try to create some new habits (and break a few old ones) this week. We'll see what happens.
My childhood fiction heroes: Madeline, Sara Crewe from A Little Princess, Laura Ingalls from all the Little House on the Prairie Books

This will be Boston-filled (although, how is that any different from normal?)
I find this pretty humorous considering I jaywalked in front of 8 cops waiting in Copley Square this afternoon.
Crossing the Longfellow Bridge earlier this week, I wasn't sure what irked me more: watching someone windsurfing on the Charles in 45 degree weather or the sheer fact that I was on the Longfellow Bridge.
And while we're on transportation in Boston, let me give bicyclists a little credit when I mention that apparently...sigh...it's legal for you to ride on a sidewalk "outside business districts, unless local laws prohibit sidewalk riding." HOWEVER: you still have to obey "all traffic laws and regulations of the Commonwealth", allow "pedestrians the right of way" and give them "an audible signal before overtaking or passing them". So the method of running a red light, swerving your way through an intersection full of pedestrians and swearing at them all as you pedal away still isn't quite legal. Just thought you should know.
